A Rogues Gallery : Before And After The Client Journey

I recently did a 10 minute presentation at a local business breakfast networking event, in which I spoke about the hows and whys of what I do as well as the journey I take my client on when they book a session with me. Whilst I was speaking I handed around my iPad with a selection of my headshot portfolio.

Afterwards I had a conversation with someone who complimented me on my work and then asked me if I had a rogues gallery of images taken at the beginning of the journey. I’m really pleased he asked me this actually because it’s one of those things that has been in the back of my mind to do for a while now and this was the kick I needed to make it happen and this is it.

But what do I mean by the journey? I’ve mentioned it numerous times on this blog already that because my main client base is business men and women, they don’t have any experience of how to behave in front of a camera. They come to me fearful and uncertain looking and this translates directly into their expression. Thing is, these images are created to promote them and their business and fearful and uncertain are not the first two words that come to mind but pretty much everyone looks it initially.

If you have images in the great wide world of you looking fearful, uncertain, scared or miserable allow me to make you feel a bit better. It’s not your fault. It’s the fault of your photographer.

I simply wont allow those types of images to go out. My job is to help you to deprogram that initial uncertainty with specific coaching. I will tell you exactly what to do, I will make you do things that make you feel weird (but look good), I will probably give you a hard time but it’s all for good reason. The end goal is to give you images where you look confident and approachable, meaning your potential clients are much more likely to be engaged with you and make contact.

What a great idea Richard, it’s a risk to share those first couple of “tester” shots but compared to those final images, you really see the journey your clients go through is worth it – great work!

    • The before’s are without any coaching so it’s not too much of a risk to show them. I’ve found it’s a great way to show the client that we really know how to make them look their best and getting a great headshot goes way beyond school photo ‘say cheese and snap’ gang.
